First subject clutch: You say that your cable is taunt and you even tightened it up more!?
There should always be a slight free play of the clutch lever before the clutch begins to release (or should I say that the cable should not be so tight as to keep the clutch from completely closing together).
The cable is not the only way that a clutch needs to be adjusted.
Second subject: Using Full synthetic oil before the engine is completely broke in: The popular myth says not to use full synthetic oil during break in. However I keep seeing comercials for Mobile 1 synthetic oil that state the names of several high quality new automobiles that come new with Mobil 1 in the engine and that they reccomend that you continue to use it from "new" for the life of the car!
My personal experience with a '97 Savage is that I changed to Mobile full synthetic MOTORCYCLE oil after the first oil change (450 miles) and do not regret doing so.
I must mention that the first use of Mobile full synthetic oil in the Savage was 20/50 MOTORCYCLE OIL and I did notice some clutch slipping when I accelerated fast. Ever since then, I have used the 10/40 grade; the cycle, clutch and shifting are great!
